Riverside High School revamps lunch menu to be healthier and more attractive to students

Changes to one school's lunch menu had kids in an uproar in 2011, but as a new school year begins, Riverside High School in Kanawha County has transformed its menu.

Last year, students complained -after Kanawha County school officials cracked down on nutrition standards. Those standards called for more meals to be made from scratch and include more nutritious options.

Students didn't like the meals. They vowed to bring their own lunch or eat a snack instead.

This year, the students and the cooks are much happier with the revamped menu. "They tried creating new things. It was mostly like they would put extra stuff into pizza and all kinds of other stuff," said Cierra Smith, a student at Riverside High School.

Another student also weighed in changes from last year's menu to this year's. "So far it's been pretty good compared to last year's beginning of the first year. I mean it got better as the year went along," said Rachel Sizemore.

The cooks said it was a work in progress and they're happy that everyone seems to be enjoying the new menu.
