Charleston may convert Holley and Worthy hotels property into apartments

Posted: Updated:

There may soon be a new housing option in Charleston. Mayor Danny Jones said Monday that the city is hoping to build apartments at the former Holley Hotel property on Quarrier Street.

Jones said the goal is to attract young professionals to the downtown area. Right now the property is owned by the Charleston Urban Renewal Authority.

The group bought the Holley and Worthy hotels from the late Frankie Veltri in the 1980s and then tore them down. The site has been vacant ever since. "It's been sitting there since 1992 and we need to develop it. This is one idea. There have been many ideas. This is not the only meeting we have had on the property," said Jones.

City Manager David Molgaard is meeting with area business leaders on Wednesday to discuss the project.
