A former Quail Ridge Construction Co. bookkeeper was sentenced to three years and one month in federal prison for tax evasion charges.

Georgina Ciavarello, 40, of Putnam County, was responsible for drafting checks and making bank account deposits and transfers, according to the U.S. Attorney's news release.

Between September 2007 and November 2010, Ciavarello embezzled $759,124.67, the news release states. During the embezzlement scheme, Ciavarello failed to pay income tax of $216,855.52 from 2007-2010.

U.S. District Judge Robert C. Chambers also ordered Ciavarello to pay $1,025,428 in restitution, the total amount of embezzled money, unpaid tax and Social Security benefits she improperly received.

The Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration's Office of Inspector General and the Charleston Police Department conducted the investigation.
