Members of the Kentucky National Guard are preparing to say goodbye to their friends and family before leaving for deployment.
According to a press release, the National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 138th Field Artillery will leave Friday, Aug. 31, for nine months. The 565 soldiers are heading for the Horn of Africa to provide security for U.S. interests.
There will be a departure ceremony Friday, Aug. 31, at 4 p.m. at the Frankfort Convention Center in Frankfort, Ky. Maj. Gen. Edward W. Tonini, the adjutant general for Kentucky and a member of the Kentucky National Guard Command Staff, will see the troops off.
According to the release, the 2nd Battalion, 138th Field Artillery is the most decorated unit in the Kentucky National Guard. The unit will return the summer of 2013.
