Community of Spencer ready to welcome home injured deputy

Posted: Updated:

Spencer, West Virginia is a small town with small town values.  The people there respect their police officers and each other.

Those officers make a vow to serve and protect the citizens and Deputy John Westfall followed through with that promise last night.

Westfall was shot three times by the suspect, Luke Baber.  That's when Baber was fatally shot by Westfall.

Police say Westfall's bullet-proof vest saved his life.  Deputy Westfall lives in the town of Spencer with his family.

The people in this town say he's trustworthy, kind, and goes out of his way to help people in his town.

Just hours before this tragedy unfolded, Mike Pauley's car was broken into and Deputy Westfall was there to help.

"He came down wrote the statements, took pictures.  He was very nice about it, said he'd go after the person, and he took another buddies statement whose car was broken into too.  He is overall a really nice guy, never out to be rude or mean to any of the citizens in Spencer, just an all around good guy.  We're proud of all the courage and strength he's showed this town," said Pauley.

No word yet on when Deputy Westfall will be back on duty, but his friends in this small town say they are ready to welcome him home as soon as he's ready.
