West Virginia attorney general candidate gets big endorsement

Posted: Updated:

Patrick Morrisey, Republican candidate for West Virginia attorney general, made a campaign stop in Charleston Saturday.

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli planned to attend, but his plane had to turn around due to the weather.  He spoke with 13NEWS over the phone.

Morrisey said it is "very unusual" for an attorney general to endorse a candidate in another state.

Cuccinelli has been a leader in the fight against what many Republicans refer to as President Obama's War on Coal.  He filed a law suit against Obama's health care reform act.

Cuccinelli told 13NEWS Morrisey's stance on coal will benefit the Mountain State.

Cuccinelli said, "It's what I think is the top issue in the country right now.  West Virginia and Virginia are no different and that's opportunity, that's the economy.  Allowing the American people to choose to use the greatest resource we've got in America to be unleashed and to get these illegal regulations off our back, that's an important role for attorney's general to play and your attorney general has failed to do that," referring to Darrell McGraw, West Virginia's current attorney general.

Morrisey accuses McGraw of being dishonest when it comes to funds in the Mountain State.

"McGraw had diverted the monies that should have gone back to the Medicaid program for the federal match and he diverted it to his pet projects.  The 4th Circuit has said that those ultimately have to get returned to the federal government, to CMS.  West Virginia taxpayers are going to be on the hook for millions of dollars," said Morrisey.

McGraw was elected as West Virginia's attorney general in 1992.

Morrisey plans to campaign around the state in the upcoming months in preparation for the election in November.
