CHARLESTON, WV (AP) -
At least one West Virginia student has killed herself since the school year began, just as officials seek to raise awareness about the threat of suicide in the state.
The death of Harrison County high school junior Ashley McIntyre adds a sense of urgency as Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin marks Suicide Prevention Week on Monday.
Tomblin plans to issue a proclamation at the state Capitol and then travel to an Eastern Panhandle high school to talk to students about this crisis.
Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among West Virginians ages 15-24. It's the third leading cause of death for that age group nationwide.
Tomblin is also speaking out against bullying. Experts say both bullies and their victims are at a higher risk for suicide.
