Four-wheeling is a popular activity here in the Mountain State

But a series of deadly accidents in our region have highlighted the need to play it safe.

Kristopher Thomasson wanted to tell his story in hopes of helping other riders. He said he is thankful to be alive after a serious ATV accident. Thomasson described the helpless feeling as his ATV rolled over on him as he attempted to take a sharp turn up a steep incline. He wasn't wearing any safety gear.

Now Thomasson is bound to a wheelchair and recovering from a surgery to repair his broken back. He has to learn how to walk all over again.

"Always make sure you are wearing a helmet and all of your protective gear," Thomasson said. "Just be careful and take it easy."

West Virginia now has it's own ATV safety program. To learn more about that program or to read the state's codes for operating an ATV just follow the link.
