Woman dies after being hit by hearse in Jefferson

A woman has died after being hit by a hearse in the 5900 block of MacCorkle Avenue Wednesday night.

The victim is a female in her 30s. She from her injuries after being taken to Thomas Memorial Hospital, according to the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office. Her name was being withheld this morning until her family is notified.

A 1986 Pontiac Parisienne Hearse, operated by Michael Hones, 45, of South Charleston, was traveling east bound on MacCorkle Avenue when it struck the female in the travel lane, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office.

According to Capt. J.S. Bailes, of the Sheriff's Office, a witness said he had previously observed the female near the area of the crash and she appeared to be impaired, the news release states. Bailes has initially reported that Jones was properly operating his vehicle at the time of the collision.

No citations were issued at the scene. The Kanawha County Sheriff's Department is investigating.
