An investigation is underway into the death of a woman who was struck and killed by a car while walking along a busy road.
The Kanawha County Sheriff's Department hasn't released the victim's name.
It happened Wednesday night on Route 60 in Jefferson.
The woman was hit by a modified hearse. She later died at the hospital.
The news was shocking to people who frequently walk around town, including William Phillips. The same thing almost happened to him.
"I was crossing the highway. A truck was coming. He didn't slow down or anything. I thought if I didn't hurry, he was going to hit me. So, I had to pick up my pace to dodge his truck because he wasn't slowing down for me," he said.
Witnesses said they saw the woman staggering along the highway and that she looked like she was under the influence.
Even if she was under the influence, people said this is an accident prone area where some people drive like maniacs.
"I think somebody is gonna get killed on bicycles out here. This shouldn't have even been here. And I think the speed limit's crazy because, these guys still hit 60 miles an hour down through here and you can tell they go pretty fast," said resident Andy Harris.
As for Phillips, he said he is going to be extra careful when he takes a walk around town from now on.
"This is a busy highway and even pedestrians need to take precautions for the fact that this road is much traveled," he said.
The victim was in her 30s.
