PIKEVILLE, Ky., (AP) -
City officials have approved plans for a new Jenny Wiley Theatre in Pikeville,
Ky.
The only professional theatre company in Kentucky
east of Interstate 75 decided last year to move its base to Pikeville after 47
years in Prestonsburg. That decision came after Pikeville officials agreed to
contribute $1.2 million toward the construction of an indoor theater and help
fund operations.
The building committee met Thursday with a New
York architectural firm to finish design plans and
voted unanimously to move forward.
Pikeville City Manager Donovan Blackburn said it was
"the final thumbs up" for planning of the project. Construction is
expected to begin in January and be completed by the end of next year.
Productions will also continue to be held at the
outdoor amphitheater in Prestonsburg.
