Community facing eviction in Logan County

RITA -

Residents of a Logan County community are in shock after receiving letters saying they are being evicted.

It is all happening in the community of Rita between Logan and Man.

Close to 30 families are being forced to move off of the property they have been renting for decades. It is all to make room for the development of a motel.

Some families say they aren't willing to leave without a fight.

"I said we don't have money to go on and no where to go to," said long time resident Russell Spears. "They said it don't matter. Within three months they'd have equipment over there and if it wasn't gone they'd destroy my place."

The land manager for DB Land, Mike Cline, said the company is taking the legal procedures necessary and that what the law requires the company to give the residents to vacate is what they will give them.

The property had been owned by various coal companies over the years. The families living on the property paid rent to the owners of the property.
