"Guns and Hoses" game raises cash for cancer

Members of local law enforcement came out Saturday to help area children with cancer.

The first annual "Guns and Hoses" softball tournament teed off at Power Park in Charleston.

Teams from law enforcement, fire, and EMS units slugged it out in a competition to benefit the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

The charity helps grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

"There's a lot of competition going on between the police and the firemen and the ambulance people," said Marisa Pedro, the regional manager for the Make-a-Wish Foundation for Southern West Virginia. "Bottom line, the money stays here and the best part about it is the smiles on the kids' faces."

Games continued throughout the day, with a grand championship match-up taking place Sunday.

One of the children threw the first pitch Saturday morning.

Players also held a moment of silence for the fallen troopers in the August 28 fatal shooting near Wallback.
