Ohio wins 56th Battle for the Bell in dramatic fashion over Marshall

Posted: Updated:

The 56th annual Battle for the Bell goes to Ohio University.

Marshall fell in the closing seconds to the Bobcats, 27-24.

The Thundering Herd stormed out to a 14-0 lead in the 1st quarter, but Ohio then scored 17 unanswered points.

Marshall trailed 17-14 at halftime.

The Herd would regain the lead in the third quarter on a Gator Ho skins 14-yard catch from Rake em Cato to put Marshall up 21-17.

Marshall would add a filed goal early in the 4th quarter to increase its lead to 24-17, but Ohio didn't give up.

With 10:43 remaining, Bobcat quarterback Tyler Tetley hit Ryan Clark on a 27-yard touchdown pass to tied the game up at 24.

Both teams traded possessions down the stretch until Ohio got into Marshall territory.

That's when Matt Weller came through for the Bobcats.

He buried a 38-yard field goal with 1:37 left in the game to give Ohio a three-point lead.

Marshall's Rakeem Cato guided the Herd offense down the field and onto the Bobcats 27-yard line.

That's when Cato made mistake that will haunt him for the rest of the season.

He tried to find C.J. Crawford, but his pass was too low and was intercepted by Jelani Woseley to seal the Bobcat win.

Cato finished 44-of-65 for 432 yards, all of which were career highs, and threw for three touchdowns.

Marshall falls to 2-2 on the year while Ohio is a surprising 3-0.

The Herd begins Conference USA play next week on the road at Rice.
