Friends, family, students, and staff who have ties to George Washington High School in Charleston gathered together to say their final goodbyes.

A teenager was killed after a crash on Quarry Ridge Road Sunday morning in Charleston after the car he was a passenger in, crashed into a tree and a pole.

His football coach spoke at the vigil.  Steve Edwards said, "We're all brothers out here.  They're all my sons.  It's just a tragic scenario that we're going through and it just tears at you.  It's just sad."

The teen's teammates tell 13NEWS having each other for support is helpful.

"We always talk about having a family atmosphere around the team and a lot of guys, especially every senior was at the hospital this morning.  It's really good that we have that support within our friends," said Ryan Switzer, running back for George Washington.

Principal George Aulenbacher says moving forward is not going to be easy.  "We're going to have to go through this tomorrow, this week, this month, this whole school year and nothing can erase his memory. It's a sad day for this school and this community, but it's an even sadder day for that family."

For Coach Edwards, family includes everyone who knew the student.  Edwards said, "This is a close knit family, a close knit school, a close knit football squad. Whenever you lose a family member, it's hard.  He certainly is going to be missed, and never forgotten."

The car was being driven by a friend and that driver was the only one wearing a seat belt, according to a press release from the Charleston Police Department.

Police say speed could've been a factor in the accident.

Grief counselors will be made available at the school in the upcoming week.

There's no word yet on funeral arrangements for the student.
