Former Mingo County doctor gets prison time in prescription drugs conspiracy

A former Mingo County doctor was sentenced to six months in federal prison for conspiracy to misuse a Drug Enforcement Administration registration number, according to a news release from U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin.

Dr. Diane Shafer, 60, previously pleaded guilty in May.

Shafer admitted that she gave prescription medication to patients she did not examine in exchange for cash.

She also admitted that she let members of her staff do the same thing when she was not in the office.

Authorities said she prescribed both Xanax and hydrocodone pills to people that did not have medical needs for either drug.

Between 2003 and early 2010, Shafer wrote over 118,000 prescriptions for controlled substances, records show.
