A man is facing some serious charges, accused of scamming his own mother out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Thomas Burger was arraigned Tuesday in a Kanawha County courtroom on a charge of exploitation of an elderly person.

Investigators said between 2007 and 2012, Burger drained more than $166,000 from an account that was set up to take care of his elderly mother who suffers from dementia.

Burger withdrew about $80,000 from the account, according to West Virginia State Police, in about four years. Then he asked his mother for Power of Attorney.

Once he got that, officers said he depleted the remaining money to support his drug addiction.

If Burger is convicted he could face up to 10 years in prison.

Right now he's in jail on a $100,000 bond and he's been ordered to have no contact with his mother.
