Constellium strike comes to an end, community reacts

Posted: Updated:

Almost 700 workers have been on strike for more than a month now in Jackson County.

Union members had indicated there would not be a vote on the contract offer, but that changed this past Saturday and the deadline was extended to allow time for a vote Wednesday.

One Jackson County resident says this is what is best for his town.  "I think it's going to be really good for the community, especially in these economic times," said Tim Ritz.  "I'm glad both sides could come to an agreement.  I always had faith that both sides could do this and it's going to be important to the towns and the businesses here."

The strike at Constellium Rolled Products started on August 5th. It is Jackson County's largest employer.

Ritz said he's proud to have such economic opportunities in Ravenswood.  "I think there was a lot of hope.  It's good they did decide to pass the contract.  I think it will be good for the town.  This is a nice town and we're lucky to have the aluminum plant there."

Our crews did try to speak with workers at the Union Hall about the vote both before the final tally and after the vote was counted.

Both times we were told to leave the property and that the police would be called.

They told us they are not releasing the final vote count.
