The U.S. Department of Education has named three West Virginia schools as 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools.
The schools are Bridgeport Middle School in Harrison County, Confidence Elementary School in Putnam County and Kenna Elementary School in Charleston. They're among 269 schools recognized nationwide.
Students at Kenna Elementary celebrated the achievement on Thursday. The school's principal talked about some of the reasons Kenna Elementary has been successful. "We're so fortunate our students come to school ready and willing to learn and they're so excited about the educational process, and we have such support from the staff and from the parents. We're all thrilled," said Karen Price.
The qualifications for this award were excellence in teaching, high test scores and forward progress.
The program recognizes public and private elementary, middle and high schools that are either high performing or have raised student achievement to high levels, particularly for disadvantaged students. The schools will be recognized at a ceremony in November in Washington, D.C.
