The Sissonville High School Indians took on the undefeated Wayne Pioneers Friday night.
But that was not the only battle going on. A battle over prayer at games is taking place. Parents say that prayers have been taking place for player safety over the loadspeaker for years before Sissonville football games.
13News is told a parent complained about the prayer and that an organization called "Freedom from Religion" contacted the superintendent, who ruled that there can not be sanctioned prayer at games.
Students wore purple to school and to the game on Friday. The say it represents the royalty of "Jesus."
Students say not being able to have the prayer over the loadspeaker takes away from their freedom of speech.
"So we did it last year all year... So it's a huge deal to the team because they prey by themselves and the cheerleaders -- they all pray... Praying helps everything work out how it's supposed to workout," said Cody Burdette, a Sissonville High School student.
Students, however, can still pray in groups if they want, according to the school's principal.
