UPDATE

The Whitesville Volunteer Fire Department has released more details about this morning's crash.

The wreck happened when the 2,200 tanker left the roadway and Massey over-corrected, according to a news release. That caused the tanker to roll multiple times.

A fire engine and two tankers were needed to fight the fire because there were no hydrants in the area.

Massey is a 35-year veteran of the department.

By mid-afternoon, he was in stable condition at CAMC.

UPDATE

The firefighter injured in this morning's fire truck wreck was stable and improving this afternoon, according to Whitesville Volunteer Fire Department Chief David Hodges.

David Massey, 54, was awake and talking early this afternoon, Hodges said.

His injuries do not appear to be lift-threatening, Hodges said.

ORIGINAL STORY

A volunteer firefighter was injured when the water tanker in which he was riding overturned on state Route 3 while en route to a fire this morning in Boone County.

The Whitesville Volunteer Fire Department firefighter was critically injured in the wreck, according to a news release from Chief David Hodges. The firefighter's name was not released.

The firefighter was flown to Charleston Area Medical Center, the news release states.

"This is a very serious situation and I would ask that everyone keep this firefighter in their thoughts and prayers," Hodges said in the news release.

The Boone County Sheriff's Office and the West Virginia Fire Marshal's Office are investigating what caused the 2,200-gallon tanker to overturn, according to the news release.

The firefighter was on his way to a fire in the 23000 block of Coal River Road in Orgas.
