A local elementary school has a new academic program.
Catlettsburg Elementary has a new gifted and talented program for advanced fourth and fifth graders.
Students are kept in the same class together for the bulk of the day this year.
Children are selected using tests and other subjective criteria.
The students have input on the curriculum, so the teacher can adjust the subject matter to things that interest them.
The teacher said the students challenge each other to get better.
"Intellectually everything becomes a debate. We are learning how to disagree and how to contribute in a way the whole group benefits from it. This is the most challenging thing I've ever done," said Lisa Wiler, teacher.
The program has 15 students this year.
