Students follow safe routes to school

CHARLESTON, West Virginia -

Deadly accidents involving pedestrians in the past several days have put the spotlight on the importance of safety when you are walking across or near a roadway.

Students at Piedmont Elementary are part of the federally funded National Safe Routes to School program. Many of them follow a marked path from their school to the Roosevelt Center where they attend an after school program. They are often coached on the safety basics such as looking both ways before crossing and walking in groups.

"Here we teach them some things and I am pretty sure Piedmont does too because we have students coming from there," said East End Family Resource Center After School Coordinator Renee Garland. "We have teachers meet them down at the bus stop so they can get here safely."

Students will participate in International Walk to School Day October 3. They will step off from the Roosevelt Center at 7:30 a.m. and walk to Piedmont Elementary School.
