Her family describes Maura Perry as a fun loving young woman who was full of life. For several years, however, she had been taking drugs, which changed her.

"We can't imagine she would do something like that," said a family member, who asked not to be identified.

Perry was charged Saturday with shooting Jimmy Cooper in the back of the head while he slept in his Peyton home. Boone County Sheriff's investigators believe the body had been there since mid-September.

Family members say Perry had been living with Cooper just weeks after the two met. Perry, according to family members, had a drug habit and it is believed Cooper gave her money which supported the habit.

"Jim was giving her money. He said, 'Honey, you don't have to steal from me. I'll give you anything you want," said the family member.

Family members said Perry stayed with many different men, and believe she would use sex to get money.

Perry was in Coopers' car following the shooting. She drove to a family members' home and told them that the car belonged to a friend.

"She said it belonged to a friend. We had no reason not to believe her."

At the time of this publication, a preliminary hearing has not been scheduled. Perry remains in Southwestern Regional Jail without bond.
