West Virginia State University has received a $1 million donation from an anonymous donor.

The announcement came Wednesday during WVSU's State of the University address. President Brian Hemphill said the school will use the funds to provide scholarships and build a new athletic complex.

"This is a game changer of a donation to this university. This is the largest single gift that we've received in the history of this university and I think that it makes a statement about the value and importance of this university in the valley, and what we are going to be doing long term to help benefit the valley and to benefit the state," said Hemphill.

Hemphill also announced that the school plans to build a new residence hall that will house 200 to 300 students. There are also plans to start renovations at Fleming Hall, where WVSU plays basketball.
