Parkersburg police detectives have arrested a man in connection to the death of a 3-year-old boy.

Matthew Edward Lamp is charged with death of a child by a parent, guardian, or custodian.

Officers said that they responded to the hospital on Sunday afternoon in reference to a seriously injured child. The mother said that the toddler had been hurt while playing in their Parkersburg home, according to a news release on the Parkersburg Police Department web site. The child was transported by medical helicopter to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. The boy later died.

Lamp is the boyfriend of the child's biological mother, according to authorities. The criminal complaint states that the boy was left in Lamp's care and that's when the child sustained the injuries which led to his death. Lamp allegedly admitted to intentionally striking the boy.

No charges have been filed against the mother at this time, however the investigation is continuing.

Lamp is being held in the North Central Regional Jail without bond. He could face 10 to 40 years in prison if convicted.
