Sunday starts the beginning of Fire Prevention Week. The week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire that killed more than 250 people in 1871.
Fire Prevention Week is the longest running public health and safety observance on record.
The President of the United States has signed a proclamation, proclaiming a national observance during that week every year since 1925.
The National Fire Protection Association encourages people to come up with a fire escape plan.
They also say to check your smoke detector batteries.
