SAINT ALBANS, West Virginia -

Brendan George spent his Saturday morning cleaning up the Saint Albans football stadium with a team of volunteers.

The day before his 15th birthday, George was, by all accounts his usual self: A reserved but upbeat high school freshman.

The next day, on his birthday, George would be dead from an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound.

"As I understand it, he wanted to be a Marine in his future," said Saint Albans ROTC Instruct and Master Gunnery Sgt. Daniel Knight. "He would have been an outstanding Marine."

Since August, Knight had been working with the teen that he described as quiet and reserved. George took an interest in the ROTC's shooting program, something Knight said he excelled at.

"He was above average," said Knight.

The shooting is still under investigation, but Brendan's father, Tim George does not believe his son committed suicide.

"He would go in early and stay late at school. That's not what a bullied student does," said George.

Saint Albans High School will have grief counselors at the school Wednesday, the first day students return after two days of inservice.

A private funeral is scheduled for Wednesday night but a public candle light vigil is being organized. At the time of this publication, a time and date has not been announced.
