UPDATE: Kanawha County opens shelters after Hurricane Sandy strikes

The following are open as storm shelters: Riverside High School, Cabin Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Pratt Volunteer Fire Department.

The Kanawha County Recreation Center is opening as an overnight shelter.

The 1st Church of the Nazarene in Dunbar, on 16th and Lightner Ave., is open now as a shelter


Shelters are already opening in Kanawha County for those without electricity as the remnants of Hurricane Sandy cover the state in snow.

A shelter will open at noon at Aldersgate United Methodist in Sissonville. Another shelter will open at 1 p.m. at Salvation Army at Roane and Tennessee Ave. in Charleston.

The Kanawha County Emergency Operation Center will announce more shelter openings by noon.
