Winfield police said they used a Taser on an alleged drunken driver who fled from police in his vehicle and refused to cooperate after he was stopped.

Jerry Brian Davis, 21, was charged with driving under the influence and obstructing police. It happened after an incident at 10:40 p.m. Monday, according to a news release from the Winfield Police Department.

Police said they received an alert from Putnam County 911 to be on the lookout for a vehicle involved in a hit and run at the Riverside Café just outside Winfield city limits. The suspect vehicle was described as a black Chevrolet truck traveling south on Route 817 near the Winfield Bridge.

An officer conducting a DUI patrol saw a vehicle in that area traveling at a high rate of speed in the wrong direction. He said the truck entered the northbound exit ramp of the bridge. The driver of the vehicle lost control of the truck and crashed into the earth mound at the base of the bridge. A passenger fled the vehicle asking for help and told the officer that the driver was drunk and angry, according to the same news release.

The officer said the suspect left the vehicle and appeared to be unsteady on his feet. He allegedly approached the officer in a threatening manner and refused to comply with instructions to get on the ground. The officer used a Taser to subdue the suspect.

Davis was transported to the sheriff's department for processing, where he refused to cooperate, police said.

He was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center in Teays Valley for treatment and transported to the Western Regional Jail.
