As we deal with the devastating effects of what is now being called Superstorm Sandy, it's important to remember that this is West Virginia, and we're no stranger to rough weather or hard times.

The State Journal and all of the West Virginia Media properties have been inundated with stories of neighbors helping neighbors.

Whether it's first-responders braving massive snow banks and howling winds to get to an emergency situation, a church opening its doors to serve as shelter for those forced out of their homes, to something as simple as clearing someone's driveway or checking in on a shut-in your neighborhood, West Virginians always come together in times of crisis.

Snow, rain and high water are awesome forces. Anyone who has ever seen an oak tree uprooted by wind knows how powerful Mother Nature can be. But when West Virginians come together, as we are doing now and have done some many times before, our capacity to overcome is unequaled.

This storm is further proof that when the going gets rough, we don't wait for assistance. We help each other.
