Glen Gainer III will return to the state Capitol as auditor for a second decade.

The Associated Press called the race for West Virginia Auditor at 10:02 p.m. Gainer, a Democrat, beat Republican challenger, former delegate Larry Faircloth of Berkeley County by a margin of 60 percent to 40 percent with 61 percent of precincts reporting.

Gainer, of Parkersburg, ran unopposed in 2008. Gainer was first elected in November 1992 as the state's 19th auditor. His father, Glen Gainer Jr., served as auditor for 16 years, from 1977 to 1993.

Faircloth, a Realtor and business owner, was first elected to the West Virginia Legislature in 1980 where he served until 2005. Faircloth pressed for accountability in the auditor's office during his campaign, calling for all auditing records to be made public.
