est Virginia's House of Delegates faces a momentous decision after Speaker Rick Thompson departs for Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin's Cabinet: choosing a new leader will help set the stage for 2014, when Republicans aim to wipe out the Democrats' ebbing majority.
West Virginia voters will send John Perdue back to the treasurer's office for the fifth time since 1996.
The Associated Press called the treasurer's race at 10:39 p.m. According to unofficial results, Perdue received 56 percent of the vote with 74 percent of precincts reporting. Republican challenger Sen. Mike Hall of Putnam County received 41 percent of the vote.
Perdue, a Democrat, took advantage of West Virginia's special election for governor and made an unsuccessful pass at the seat, but lost in a wide primary race.
Perdue also faced several questions and a federal investigation into a land deal in Mason County that involved Perdue, a close friend and the West Virginia Housing Development Fund, of which Perdue is a board member. Perdue's campaign contributions also received some scrutiny, after it was discovered he received donations from a number of his employees, including several $1,000 donations.
Perdue served as a senior aide to former Governor Gaston Caperton for eight years before being elected to treasurer. He was unopposed in the 2008 election.
Hall still has two years remaining on his term with the West Virginia Senate. Hall was first elected to the House of Delegates in 1994. He served six years there before his election to the Senate in 2006. Hall is the Senate Minority leader and is a financial adviser.
