Shepherd University's Wind
Symphony will perform wind band classics led by student conductors at 8 p.m.
Nov. 14 in the Frank Center.
Selections will include "Balkanya," an
original work by Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost; "Exultate" by
Samuel Hazo; "On a Hymnsong of Phillip Bliss," a chorale setting of
the hymn "It is Well With My Soul" by David Holsinger; a
transcription of the final two sections of Carl Orff's orchestral masterpiece
"CarminaBurana"; a classic march from W.P. Chambers' "The Boys
of the Old Brigade"; a transcription of "Prelude and Fugue in G minor"; an organ work by J.S. Bach; the first two movements of Vincent
Persichetti's "Divertimento"; a new work by Richard Saucedo called
"Windsprints"; the first movement of "English Folk Song
Suite" by Ralph Vaughan Williams; "Toccata for Band" by Frank
Erickson; the depiction of a sunrise in Spain from Bill Calhoun's "Morning
in Madrid"; "With Quiet Courage," a ballad by Larry Daehn; and a
piece by David Holsinger titled "Abram's Pursuit."
The Wind Symphony will present a variety of wind
band literature as interpreted by a new generation of conductors. After
completing two semesters of conducting, the symphony has selected music,
studied the scores, written program notes, developed rehearsal strategies and
rehearsed. Building upon a tradition of musical excellence at Shepherd, each
instrumental student is provided with musical experiences and valuable lessons
through the process of realizing a score and bringing the performance to life.
Shepherd's Department of Music has a 100 percent placement rate for its music
education majors and programs.
The Wind Symphony concert is $10 for general
admission and $5 for students.
