WV officials announce changes to SMART 529 Direct plan

West Virginia State Treasurer John Perdue stopped by Piedmont Elementary in Charleston on Wednesday, Nov. 14. He was there to talk to students about the importance of going to college.

Perdue also announced new changes to SMART 529 WV Direct Plan. The program no longer requires a minimum contribution and is investing primarily in Vanguard funds.

Perdue said it's all part of the state's commitment to providing West Virginia residents with low-cost savings options for college. "It's a win, win, win. It's no fees, an opportunity to buy the best gift here at Christmas time, that's around the corner, for your child or grandchild, and invest in a program, get started and see how that grows, and then hopefully, they will continue to invest in that program every month," said Perdue.

There are currently 9,000 SMART 529 Direct account holders who will benefit from the changes.
