An area family has lost their home to a fire just before the holiday season.
South Charleston firefighters say a single-mother and her three children lived in the home. The fire broke out around 4 a.m. Friday in the 300-block of Montrose Drive.
Luckily that mother and her children were staying with relatives and no one was home at the time of the fire.
"It's real tough whenever you run a call (and) children are involved. It makes it really hard, especially around the holidays, when they lose everything in their possession," said Virgil White, Assistant Fire Chief with the South Charleston Fire Department.
The American Red Cross is assisting and the mother is working with her insurance company.
Firefighters believe the fire started in the basement. The exact cause remains under investigation.
