Dozens of people slept outside on Friday night at Magic Island in Charleston. It's part of one group's effort to raise awareness about homelessness with an event called, "One Night Without A Home."
The Kanawha Valley Collective organized the event. It started at 6:30 p.m. Participants were asked to bring nonperishable food items to donate to local pantries.
The goal is to put people into an environment which helps them better understand the challenges that homelessness creates. People pitched tents, made their own cardboard shelters and used whatever they could find to stay warm.
The night also included speakers and live music.
The Kanawha Valley Collective is a consortium of individuals and organizations working collaboratively to enrich the quality of life for individuals and families in the Kanawha Valley and surrounding areas.
