Flags are being flown at half-staff Saturday in honor of a central Kentucky sheriff's deputy who was shot to death while checking on a stopped car this week.
Gov. Steve Beshear directed state flags to be lowered on the day of funeral services for 31-year-old Marion County Sheriff's Deputy Anthony Rakes at Marion County High School in Lebanon. He was shot Wednesday morning and died during surgery.
Rakes had been with the sheriff's department for six years and previously served two years with the Lebanon Police Department.
Kentucky State Police charged 49-year-old Dewayne Shipp of McDaniels in Breckinridge County with murder. Police believe Shipp was headed to the home of his ex-wife in Lincoln County when Rakes stopped to check on him.
