HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – DeAndre Kane recorded the fourth triple-double in
Marshall men's basketball history, but Thundering Herd was out rebounded
and outscored by Hofstra in a 103-100 double overtime loss Sunday at the
Mack Sports Complex.
With 33 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, while playing all 50
minutes, Kane became the first Marshall player to record a triple-double
since Hassan Whiteside's 14 point, 11 rebound and 13 block performance
against UCF on Feb. 27, 2010. Kane is the second player to ever
accomplish the feat and the first to do so with assists.
"It's a very disappointing loss," said head coach Tom Herrion. "We
didn't get the job done defensively. Giving up 103 points is
inexcusable, I know it's double-overtime, but we didn't do a good job
defensively. Getting out rebounded by 14 is very disturbing to me. "
Hofstra (3-2) finished with 57 rebounds while Marshall (2-3) had 43. It
was the third game in three days for both teams as it wrapped up the 2K
Sports Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project.
"We have a long way to go, a long way to go," Herrion said. "We have a
lot of season left, but we have to go in and adjust some things. What we
are doing on the defensive end isn't good enough to win."
Of Kane's 33 points, 22 came in the second half when the Herd (2-3)
outscored the Pride (3-2) 54-48, erasing a 37-31 deficit at halftime.
It was in the second half that the Herd trailed by its largest margin of
the game 64-51 with 9:19 to play. A Chris Martin three-pointer with
2:21 to play cut the deficit to one, 78-77. After two Hofstra free
throws, Martin hit another three-pointer to tie the game 80-80 with 1:31
remaining. Marshall trailed 85-82 with 19 seconds to play when junior
Elijah Pittman was left open in the corner for a three-pointer to tie it
85-85.
The first overtime saw just eight points scored. Marshall jumped out to
an 89-86 lead, its first of the game, with 2:14 to play after Pittman
made a 5-foot jump shot, was fouled and made the free throw. Three free
throws by the Pride tied up the game at 89-89. With 23 seconds left and
the ball, Kane took the final shot, a three at the top of the key, which
missed.
Hofstra scored the first six points of the second overtime to lead 95-89
with 1:12 to play. Marshall scored four of the next five points in the
game and trailed by just two points, 96-94 with 40 seconds remaining.
A total of 69 fouls were called in the game, six of which came in the
final 40 seconds with Marshall attempting to gain possession by hoping
for Hofstra to go cold at the free throw line. But the Pride went 7-of-8
in that stretch to the win the game by three points.
"In the second half we played with courage and fought back," Herrion
said. "We were able to stretch the game, but it was too little too
late."
The two overtime periods and 99 free throw attempts made game close to
three hours long. Marshall was 26-of-42 from the line for 61.9 percent
while Hofstra was 40-of-57 for 70.2 percent.
Pittman finished with a career-high 20 points on 6-of-13 shooting,
7-of-8 from the free throw line. He also added two assists and three
blocks in 46 minutes of play.
Sophomore Chris Martin scored 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting, all of which came from three-point range.
Shaquille Stokes led Hofstra with 26 points and went 11-of-14 from the free throw line.
Marshall will next play against Nevada on Saturday at 7 p.m.
