    Alpha Natural Resources announced July 31 that 11 affiliated coal mines and other facilities in West Virginia could be idled by mid-October, potentially causing 1,100 to be laid off.

Kanawha County is still eligible for individual Federal Individual Assistance following property damage due to June 29- July 10, 2012 derecho storm.

FEMA has extended the date for individuals to file until December 19, 2012.

In all, 20 West Virginia counties, including Boone, Cabell, Clay, Jackson, Lincoln, Mason, Mingo, Roane, Wood, Fayette, Nicholas and Kanawha are eligible for individual assistance from FEMA.

Affected residents can begin the disaster application process by registering online at www.disasterassistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-3362. The toll-free telephone numbers are available from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Applicants should be prepared to provide basic information about themselves (name, permanent address, and phone number), their insurance coverage an any other information to help substantiate losses.

The June 29 derecho and subsequent storms left three people dead and more than 680,000 customers without electricity across West Virginia alone. Kentucky and Ohio also sustained damage. Public hearings are under way in West Virginia to talk about the response.
