Kanawha County hunter gets a surprise at the check-in station

Oh deer! A hunter in Kanawha County found something quite interesting in the woods. Timothy Taylor was hunting behind his house in Hernshaw.

He bagged a buck, or at least that's what Taylor thought. In fact, it was a 7-point. But there was something a little off about the deer. First, it still had velvet on its antlers. Second, it was missing something essential.

Taylor took his kill to check-in station in Marmet where the officers just couldn't believe it. The deer that Taylor thought was a buck, was actually a doe.

"They said it was pretty rare, but not unusual, but pretty rare. Everybody I've talked to, nobody has seen it or heard of it. I guess that's just a once in a lifetime thing I recon," said Taylor.

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources confirmed that the phenomenon does happen, but it's rare. When the check-in station didn't know how to proceed, the DNR advised officers to mark it as an antler deer.
