After the hustle and bustle of Black Friday ends for big box stores, small businesses will get their time in the spotlight for Small Business Saturday.
Welcome mats promoting "Small Business Saturday" have been distributed to several retailers in the Charleston area as a way of encouraging shoppers to buy at locally owned businesses this weekend.
The Charleston Area Alliance is joining the nationwide effort to bring people into smaller stores in the tie between Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
And many local business owners and employees are looking forward to the extra boost.
Emilie Yarid-Couch, owner of Yarid's Shoes, said she is thrilled small businesses are getting the extra attention.
"We are happy that they are doing it," she said. "We are trying to be non-promotional, but we're competing with our customer service and free gift wrapping."
Adrian Blackstock, assistant gallery director and registrar at The Art Store in Charleston, said this is the first year the store has promoted Small Business Saturday.
Blackstock said the store started sales on pottery items on Black Friday. She also said the store is running a promotion where American Express cardholders get a $25 credit with their purchase of $25 or more.
"I think it's good that they can have their big thing on Friday, and then there's a warm welcome to the small businesses on Saturday," she said. "I think it's a good thing to promote small businesses because you don't hear about it during the holidays."
