CHARLESTON, West Virginia -

As the Black Friday frenzy winds down, the need to protect the big ticket items from burglars becomes a reality.

While other types of crimes spike in the summer months, more property crimes rise in the later months, according to statistics compiled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Police say to avoid becoming a victim, take extra precautions:

  • Lock your doors and windows
  • If you do leave for an evening, leave a light on in the home
  • If you leave for several days, make arrangements to avoid having mail pile up in the mailbox
West Virginia statistics show that 2011 was within range of many other years in terms of the number of burglary or property crimes.
