Fire envelops several buildings, cars in Clendenin

UPDATE:

A fire engulfed several structures in Clendenin Saturday evening, and firefighters said they're afraid the flames could burn all night long.

Crews responded to a call just minutes after 7 p.m. Saturday, off Bufflick Road in Clendenin.

"We get up here, and half the top of the mountain is on fire," said Frank Kirk, the assistant chief at Clendenin Fire Department. "This is not the first time we've been here."

Kirk said the fire enveloped two campers, a rollback, at least three vehicles, a barn, and a 1,000 gallon tank of propane. No one was injured in the fire, he added.

The owner of these items lives at the bottom of the hill, according to police and neighbors. They said the owner collected these items in a "junkyard" to sell later.

Saturday marks the fifth time someone has reported a fire at this location. Fire crews responded from Clendenin, Frame and Pinch.

"This is how he makes his living for his wife," said Donna Brown, who lives nearby. "This is a junkyard, but people are burning his stuff and it's like it doesn't matter. These are old people."

Brown said she thinks someone burned the owner's items on purpose as a "sick joke."

"Why do they deserve this? They don't do nothing. They'd give you the shirt off their back to help you," said Brown, with tears in her eyes.

State Police is investigating the fire. They are currently interviewing witnesses and neighbors. Stay with 13News for the latest updates.
