CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia's Board of Education is urging the Legislature to allow counties to alter their school calendars and reduce the role seniority plays in teacher hiring.
The recommendations are among dozens of steps drawn from or inspired by the recent audit of West Virginia's education system.
The board endorsed all but about 10 of that review's recommendations last week. Board President Wade Linger outlined the board's audit response to a House-Senate subcommittee.
But Senate Education Chair Robert Plymale was among lawmakers Tuesday seeking clearer direction or stronger stances by the board.
The audit concluded that West Virginia has one of the country's most inflexible and bureaucrat-heavy school systems. It contrasts the state's poor rankings for student performance with the billions spent on education each year.
