CHARLESTON, WV -

John R. Teare Jr., counsel in the law firm Spilman Thomas & Battle's Charleston office, has been appointed to a three-year term on the board of governors of the Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia.

The Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia's goal is to bring together attorneys who defend individuals and corporations in civil litigation for the purpose of elevating the standards of West Virginia trial practice, supporting and advocating for the improvement of the adversary system of jurisprudence, and increasing the quality of services rendered by the legal profession to the citizens of West Virginia.

Teare's primary area of practice at Spilman is litigation defense, including handling matters for The Battle Group, the firm's high-stakes litigation strike force. He has extensive experience serving as first chair litigator in jury trials.

Teare currently serves as general counsel to the West Virginia Chiefs of Police Association, West Virginia Sheriffs' Association and West Virginia Housing Institute. He earned his undergraduate degree from Wilmington College and his law degree from T.C. Williams School of Law.
