Some people at the West Virginia State Capitol Complex took time on Monday to honor service that is truly done in the name of the Mountain State.

Crew members from the USS West Virginia received certificates for their service Senate President Jeff Kessler outside the Senate Chamber.

A high-ranking military member pointed out why it's so important to show appreciation to these service members and their families. "Anybody who puts their life on the line for our freedom has to be special to us, but serving the USS West Virginia, they are super special to West Virginians. It's our namesake ship. So we just definitely want to show them how much West Virginians appreciate people who serve their country," said retired Major General Allen Tackett with the West Virginia National Guard.

Crew members enjoyed a brunch that was sponsored by the West Virginia Department of Veterans Affairs.

West Virginia's history of military service is the focus of the Division of Culture and History's fourth annual showcase. The showcase will be on display at the Culture Center in Charleston on Tuesday, Dec. 6, from 7-9 p.m.

The showcase includes military documents, diaries, posters, photographs, manuscripts, National Guard materials and items from the USS West Virginia.
