Many things have changed about a typical day in the classroom. But the tradition of saying the Pledge of Allegiance is alive and well in most schools. But some parents and students were outraged that the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance and playing of the National Anthem were canceled Monday at Capital High School.
13 News called the principal, Clinton Giles, who confirmed what parents had reported.
"They canceled it because someone didn't want to stand up for the pledge," said senior Cherry Huynh.
Giles declined our request for an on camera interview but said he canceled the activity after problems Friday. He said students were talking and sleeping during that time. He also told 13 News that it is his right to cancel the activity because he is the principal and the activity is not required.
"You know, there are soldiers overseas putting up their lives for us and I think it is just the respectful thing to do," Huynh said. "For him to cancel it was ridiculous and unnecessary."
We contacted Kanawha County School Superintendent Ron Duerring and were told he has no comment on the matter.
Giles said Monday they may begin saying the pledge again Tuesday.
