Twelve institutions seeking NCAA approval of a newly formed athletic conference took a step last week in moving the process forward.

The Mountain East Conference, composed of West Virginia, Virginia and Ohio schools, hand-delivered a formal application to NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis on Friday.

Reid Amos, vice president of broadcasting at West Liberty University, was selected unanimously as the league's first commissioner by the MEC board upon recommendations of the MEC's Committee of Athletic Directors.

"Reid has nearly two decades of experience with NCAA Division II athletics and has successfully led many initiatives, particularly in the areas of conference development and media enhancements," said West Liberty University President Robin Capehart, interim chair of the MEC Board. "In fact, he is currently serving as Chair of the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Committee."

Charter members of the conference are Concord University, Fairmont State University, Glenville State College, Notre Dame College, Shepherd University, the University of Charleston, the University of Virginia's College at Wise, Urbana University, West Liberty University, West Virginia State University, Wheeling Jesuit University and West Virginia Wesleyan College.

According to a news release from the MEC, the league would meet requirements for conference championships in men's and women's basketball, baseball, men's and women's cross country, football, men's and women's golf, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's track and field, and volleyball.
