A Shepherdstown resident who obtained more than $5 million in personal loans from people he promised to repay with lottery winnings he never won will serve 282 months in prison, the U.S. Attorney's office recently announced.

David F. Brackett Jr., 63, pleaded guilty in August to wire fraud and money laundering stemming from a scheme that lasted from January 2002 to March 2011, the news release states.

According to the Aug. 2 information, Brackett used the money from these personal loans to buy a house and vehicles and to gamble.

The news release states Brackett laundered his money through several bank transactions, which involved many banks and accounts.
